The Ubuntu Touch project was started in 2011. UBports' mission is to support the collaborative development of Ubuntu Touch and to promote its widespread use. The UBports project was seeded by Marius Gripsgard in 2015 and the source code was transferred to the UBports Foundation where it now resides. It was then adopted by UBports as a community project. but Mark Shuttleworth announced that Canonical would terminate support due to lack of market interest on 5 April 2017. The project was started by Canonical Ltd. Its user interface is written in Qt, and is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, but the original goal of convergence was intended to bring Ubuntu Touch to laptops, desktops, IOT devices and TVs for a complete unified user experience. Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system, being developed by the UBports community.
